My mother taught me how to cook when I was a young girl. The sweet tangerines and crunchy caramelized almonds make this one of my favorite recipes. —Helen Musenbrock, O'Fallon, Missouri

1/2 cup sliced almonds
3 tablespoons sugar, divided
2 medium tangerines or 1 navel orange

1/4 teaspoon pepper
