Glazed green beans with onions, bacon, dried cranberries and maple syrup are sweet, savory and 100% addictive.
Instructions
1
Steam the green beans
2
Place the green beans in a steamer basket, and set the basket over 1 inch of water in a large saucepan. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Cover the pan and reduce the heat to maintain a gentle boil. Steam the green beans until they're crisp-tender, four to five minutes. Editor’s Tip: Trim the green beans before steaming them. Line them up so the stem ends face the same direction, then use a sharp knife to cut off the tough bits.
3
Cook onion and bacon
4
While the green beans steam, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bacon pieces and cook until the bacon is crisp. Drain off any excess bacon fat from the skillet. Editor’s Tip: Onions release moisture as they cook, which can prevent the bacon from getting crispy. For the best texture, start the bacon first and add the onion once it crisps, or cook them separately.
5
Combine the remaining ingredients
6
Add the dried cranberries, maple syrup, salt, pepper and bourbon (if using) to the skillet with the onion and bacon. Stir to combine, then add the steamed green beans and toss them until the beans are coated with glaze. Cook until the glaze thickens and everything is warmed through.
